FrOg

The FrOg

It is true, the ToAd was never meant to be played on a computer. You build the stuff online, print it out, and then take it to an actual table and play it in the company of actual people. It's good to get away from these machines for awhile. However, the world is large and constantly expanding. People move. People have kids. Time gets compromised, and as an adult it's not easy pulling a game together, let alone an old-fashioned adventure campaign.

And so the FrOg was created.

Nobody knows what FrOg stands for, but basically it is a simulation of the "kitchen table" environment around which RPG's are traditionally played. It is not an MMORPG. It doesn't run 24/7. It is an actual event. A director needs to set up a campaign, gather players, decide on a date when the game will start, and be at the computer when that time comes around. So far as the game interface itself is concerned. Here are some highlights of the system....

  • Nothing to download. If you have the Firefox browser you can play the FrOg without any additional software.
  • Full integration with the rest of the ToAd. Characters, adventures, equipment - everything has a place in the FrOg.
  • Point and Click Action. While it may not be as simple as a joystick and a fire button, the Frog has been streamlined to reduce pointless typing and number juggling.
  • Dual Chat Screens. One contains the game the other is a babble box designed to hold all the outside talk that goes on during a game.
  • Battle Board. For combat encounters, a director can quickly sketch out a battle board map (or prepare one in advance) and players can move icons around it to show their movement and positioning.
  • Tales of Adventure. Partly for nostalgia's sake and partly to keep players on their best behaviour, when you take a character on an adventure the transcript of that adventure will attach itself to the character as a Tale of Adventure. These may be read by other players on the site and are commonly reviewed by directors wondering whether or not to let you into their games.
  • Totally Free. While you will need to have a director level membership to run a campaign, anyone who is a member of the ToAd can play for free.

Update!
The FrOg is online and working however it has yet to be extensively tested.
