Karen is an enigma. The only way to possibly explain her, if not describe her, is to say that she runs counter to pretty much everything and anything people have come to expect from her. They wanted her to be the prom queen, she joined the wrestling team. They gave her a college scholarship to study psychology, she dropped out a few months before graduation to become a stripper - claiming that it would help her endure the phobia she has against wearing clothing. Karen drinks too much and smokes pot like a chimney but remains sickeningly fit and beautiful. Her main weak spot is money and a chronic lack of it, a problem compounded by a complete inability to keep control of her credit cards when there are other pretty girls around. The closest she has to a constant companion is washed up stage magician Guy Thompson. Some chemistry does exist between the two of them, but it is often complicated by the craziness of Karen's life and the fact that she was dating Guy's girlfriend Julia on the sly and is the reason the two broke up.

Karen Underwood is a trouble magnet to say the least. If it doesn't find her, then she finds it - usually through any of her many strange and doomed to fail money making schemes. Although she is not an anarchist, she does hate authority and the status quo and often seeks to actively undermine the powers that be in any way possible. She never wears "acceptible clothing" if she can get away with it and tends to live at night, only going out during the daytime to work on her tan.
